This applies in terms of both quality and quantity, with the game providing a plethora of highly polished multiplayer experiences for folks to enjoy. For folks who are primarily interested in multiplayer, the developers’ focus on multiplayer definitely pays dividends, with BLOPS 4 offering what is arguably the best multiplayer experience in the Call of Duty franchise. ![]() When shooters in the past said they were skipping a full campaign to deliver a better multiplayer experience, it felt like lip service for cutting corners. As it is now, I'm left thinking of the what-ifs.ĭespite my disappointment with the story, however, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 absolutely deserves credit for one thing. It makes me wonder even more if it would have been better served by a full campaign. Despite a promising start, the story devolves into a hodgepodge narrative more akin to a stream of consciousness tale that also upends the narrative from previous games. Admittedly, it’s the weakest narrative in the Black Ops series, and not just because of its short length. But it’s definitely better than nothing, which is what you get with games that cut off their campaigns altogether. Yes, it feels like being given crumbs as opposed to a whole loaf of bread. It’s the main reason why I give the game a bit of leeway from a narrative standpoint despite its removal of a full-fledged story mode. When you go through the tutorial to familiarize yourself with each “Specialist” or soldier type, you end up playing through a mini-campaign of sorts. Granted, BLOPS 4 doesn’t fully take out storytelling. A Black Ops without a dedicated campaign just doesn’t feel right. Of all the Call of Duty games to be released, the Black Ops series arguably had the best storytelling overall. The disconnect felt even stronger with Black Ops 4. Taking out the story mode also meant that once a game’s multiplayer servers are gone, you’re left with a game that you paid for but essentially can’t play anymore. For starters, the multiplayer experience from games that took out their campaigns honestly didn’t feel any different to me. Even as some folks justified the removal of campaigns as a good thing because it allows developers to concentrate on making the online experience better, such comments rang hollow for me.
